My Process
I take pride in stretching and preparing my own canvases, ensuring they meet my exacting standards. For my artwork, I exclusively use Gamblin paints, mediums, and solvents, which are expertly crafted in Portland, OR. My creative process often begins on site, where I sketch thumbnail drawings and capture photographs to bring back to my studio, serving as references for my vision. While I sometimes rely on these photos to understand specific landforms or landscape features, there are instances when I skip preliminary sketches altogether, allowing the painting to develop organically from my emotional responses and memories.
In my practice, I utilize the indirect painting method, applying multiple layers of glazes to create a luminous effect with minimal visible brush strokes. This technique helps my paintings transcend the literal scenes captured by my camera, giving them a life of their own.
Recently, my focus has shifted toward creating landscapes that are intentionally non-specific. My aim is to evoke moods rather than depict particular places, encouraging viewers to connect with the artwork through their personal memories, dreams, emotions, or nostalgia for various locations.
